What is wireless internet access?
Wireless internet access provides high-speed access to the internet without the use of a phone line. Instead, it uses radio signals to transmit data. The data travels from your computer to an antenna mounted outside your residence or business, and then connects to your internet provider.

How fast is it?
Wireless internet service competes with DSL and cable modem service speeds. Infrastructures are designed to handle up to 11 Mbps and is a dedicated connection to the customer. This means that during peak times, the internet service is faster and more consistent. DSL services use a shared connection, and may slow down during peak times of the day. Wireless connections are also instantaneous. Their connection speeds are measured in milliseconds. This means you can use the connection to play “real time” online games.

What is the difference between wireless and satellite internet access?
Satellite has a latency time, or a several second delay, between sending and receiving. Wireless internet does not. While both services transmit data without the use of wires, satellite access sends and receives data through satellites orbiting around the earth. Wireless internet access uses a path of antennas between you and the internet service provider.

What equipment do I need to use wireless service?
You will need a receiver and a bi-directional antenna placed outside your home or business. The receiver connects to your computer through an ethernet cable. Multiple computers can be hooked up using a router.

Do I have to dialup to my internet service provider?
Wireless internet access is an "always on" technology. This means that you do not have to wait for your modem to dialup, just open your internet browser, and you are on the internet within seconds. You stay connected 24/7!

Will my antenna pick up interference or other signals?
Wireless internet operates on the 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz spread spectrum radio band. Although this band is unlicensed, it is becoming the standard transmission band for wireless computer products worldwide. Because it is spread spectrum, the band is difficult to detect, so it is unlikely that the antenna and receiver would pick up any stray signals. It is also unlikely that your signal would be picked up by anyone else.

Is wireless internet access secure?
The 2.4 GHz spread spectrum band has been used in the past for military communications because spread spectrum is difficult to detect or interfere with. internet providers use encryption protocols to transfer data. Wireless internet service is just as secure as its broadband competitors.

What are the benefits of wireless internet access over other high-speed technologies?
Wireless internet is predicted to be available to more homes and businesses than DSL or cable modem service in the near future. Wireless internet service implementation costs less for providers than DSL or cable modem, so it is expected that many wireless internet services will be popping up all over the world. Since there are no phone or cable line limitations with wireless access, the probability of actually getting the service is greater.

Currently, the equipment and installation cost of wireless internet is less than DSL. It can reach higher upload and download speeds. High-speed and availability make wireless internet access a viable alternative to other leading technologies.

What about SPAM?

We provide three layers of SPAM prevention.

The 1st layer is a lookup of the sending server against several SPAM blacklists. If the server appears on one of these blacklists, the mail is not accepted at all.

The 2nd & 3rd layers work together in filtering SPAM based on points. These points are assigned based on SPAM indicators and then the mail is tagged as SPAM in the subject line of the e-mail.

You can then create a rule in your e-mail client that moves these suspected SPAM messages into a folder for later deletion. If you get a message that is tagged as SPAM but is not, forward it to falsepositives@sbtnet.com. After a while, you can create a rule to delete the SPAM from the folder, once you are sure they are actually SPAM. False positives are rare, but they do happen.

If you receive a piece of SPAM and you are certain you didn't sign up for an opt-in list from which the e-mail was received, then go ahead and forward that message to knownspam@sbtnet.com. It will be added to the 3rd layer of SPAM filtering each night at midnight.

Also, when you are in the WorldClient (the web based e-mail client for traveling, checking your home e-mail address when at the office, etc. at http://mail.sbtnet.com), you can move the SPAM message into the #KnownSpam folder.

SPAM Stats

We filter about 84% of SPAM in the 1st layer of filtering which has not dropped below one million pieces of SPAM blocked for 10 months. The other 16% of SPAM is filtered through the 2nd and 3rd layers to end up with 1% of SPAM actually getting through unscathed. This is a tremendous improvement, but the more SPAM you forward to knownspam@sbtnet.com the more you help everyone.
